A snug, downturned fit helps edging and smearing; climbing shoes are typically sized 1–2 sizes smaller than street shoes. For single-pitch sport climbs a lightweight harness with a comfortable padded waistbelt and simple leg loops keeps things efficient. On trad or alpine routes pick a harness with dual adjustable leg loops and multiple gear loops so you can layer and carry cams such as the Black Diamond C4 Camalot.

Dynamic single ropes in the 9.5–11mm range and 70–80m length are a solid all-around choice for sport and many alpine pitches. If you expect wet or mixed conditions, choose a dry-treated rope to boost water repellency and help preserve fall ratings of roughly 5–10 UIAA falls.

If you want assisted braking, an auto-locking device like the Petzl GriGri handles 8.5–11mm ropes and is well suited to sport and many trad situations. Tubular devices remain lighter and offer smooth rope feed for lowering and top-rope work, while figure-8 styles are handy for big-wall rappels.

Short approaches and day cragging are comfortable with smaller packs in the 8–20L range that prioritize light weight and quick-access pockets. For multi-day mountaineering or alpine objectives, step up to 30–40L packs that can stow crampons, an ice axe, and extra layers for harsh weather.
