Men's Hiking & Backpacking Shoes

Think about trail type and pack weight: light hiking shoes favor agility on moderate trails while trail runners work best for faster-paced, varied paths. For multiday trips or heavy loads pick backpacking boots with high collars and durable full-grain leather, and remember minimalists like the Bedrock Cairn 3D (17 oz, zero-drop) are built for light, speedy outings rather than heavy packs.

Try them on with the hiking socks you plan to wear and leave about a thumb’s width of toe space to allow forward foot movement on descents. A snug heel prevents slipping and adjustable laces or quick-lace systems help dial in security, and keep in mind leather models may need break-in time.

Full-grain leather boots deliver outstanding durability and water resistance, making them a smart choice for rugged, multiday backpacking. Expect a longer break-in and slightly reduced breathability compared with mesh uppers, but many leather options allow sole replacement for thousands of miles.

Opt for deep, widely spaced lugs and a pronounced heel brake to shed mud and hold on technical descents. Durable rubber outsoles with reinforced toe caps and traction ratings for wet surfaces will give the best grip across rock, mud, and ice.

Midsoles made from EVA provide plush cushioning while polyurethane adds stiffness and long-term support, and higher stack heights increase cushion at the cost of ground feel. Models like Hoka prioritize ultra-plush, high-stack comfort for long miles, whereas zero-drop options offer a closer-to-ground, more agile feel.
