Mountaineering Crampons

Match the binding style to your boot welt: automatic (step-in) needs full welts on mountaineering boots, semi-automatic (hybrid) works with toe welts, and strap-on fits hiking boots or overboots without welts. This keeps the crampon secure and compatible with B1–B3 boot categories.

Steel is the better choice for mixed terrain and technical routes because chromoly or stainless steel is durable, sharpenable after rock use, and typically weighs 500–800g per pair. Aluminum is much lighter for ski mountaineering—around 200–400g like the Blue Ice Harfang—but it dulls quickly on rock.

For steeper, vertical ice pick C3-rated crampons with aggressive front points and 14-point layouts intended for ice climbing and dry tooling. Technical walking and steeper icy routes often do well with C2 12-point crampons, while C1 10-point models suit lower-angle snow and glacier travel.

Mono-point designs and modular frames give the precision and versatility needed for vertical ice and mixed climbing, letting you swap or sharpen points as conditions demand. Models like the Petzl Lynx offer modular construction for technical mixed routes and excellent hard-ice penetration.

Sizing adjusts with levers, cables, or straps and most crampons have adjustable toe and heel pieces that span roughly 8–14cm of boot length, so set them snug against your boot sole before clipping in. Check that the middle bar allows the boot to flex appropriately for C1/C2 models and confirm compatibility with your boot’s welt type.
