Ice Climbing Crampons

If you wear a flexible approach boot, a strap-on binding works best because it fits flexible soles, while step-in bindings require rigid welts and are intended for B3/C3-compatible rigid mountaineering boots. Hybrid bindings provide a middle ground for semi-rigid boots.

10-point crampons with horizontal frontpoints are ideal for snow walking, glacier travel and ski touring on moderate slopes. For steeper or technical ice choose 12-point semi-rigid models or 14-point vertical/monopoint crampons for waterfall ice and high-altitude routes over 5000m, and models like the Black Diamond Stinger cover the versatile 12-point technical range.

Frontpoint geometry changes precision and balance: horizontal points give stable purchase on snow and low-angle ice, while vertical dual or monopoint designs deliver the bite needed for vertical or overhanging ice. Adjustable modular points are handy for mixed terrain, and vertical frontpoints commonly range 35–50mm to tailor penetration.

Steel offers maximum durability and sharpenability, often built from heat-treated chrome-molybdenum or stainless steel for better rust resistance. Aluminum crampons are much lighter at roughly 300–500g per pair for approaches but dull on rock, while lightweight steel models like the Petzl Dart weigh about 595g per pair.

Match the crampon to your boot compatibility rating (C1–C3 or B1–B3) and check that your boot length falls within the crampon’s adjustable range, typically 35–46. Use the heel and length clips for final tuning, and expect anti-balling plates and safety straps as standard features to reduce slippage.
