Chains and coils that slip over shoes are the go-to for sidewalks and gentle grades, offering reliable grip on everyday ice. Stainless-steel chains resist corrosion and work well for commuting or walking on packed ice.

Traction spikes with about 0.5-inch steel points are ideal for boot-packed snowfields and off-trail winter travel up to roughly 25–30 degrees. For steeper or technical ice above that angle, step up to rigid crampons with longer front points.

Fit depends on sole flexibility and profile, so elastomeric-harness microspikes pair best with flexible trail runners while rigid crampons suit stiff boots with heel welts. Sizes generally match shoe length (men’s 5–15, women’s 6–16) and you’ll want spike placement under the ball and heel for balance.

Modular designs make field replacement of spikes straightforward, and reinforced welts plus anti-balling plates help reduce upkeep. Expect durable materials like elastomer harnesses rated to cold resistance around -40°F and components built to last several hundred hours of rugged use.

Hybrid models that combine spikes and studs manage mixed snow and ice on moderate terrain and often include secondary spikes for sidehill security and adjustable straps to prevent slippage.
