Green Ice Climbing Hardware

Match crampons to your boot's welt and binding style. Automatic step-in crampons require a full heel welt while semi-rigid or strap-on models work with softer boots, and aggressive front points are common on pairs that weigh about 1.75 lbs per boot (size 42) like the Blue Ice Harfang.

Longer screws (13–22cm) give better purchase in thin or variable ice, while 10cm stubby screws are useful for fat, rotten ice features. Steel screws handle wet or variable conditions better, whereas aluminum options like the Petzl Laser Speed Light (available 10–22cm) save weight.

Tools with over 45-degree curved blades and lengths in the 50–65cm range make hooking and swinging on steep routes much easier. Models such as the Black Diamond Hydra pair that geometry with a roughly 1.3 lb weight per tool and ergonomic grips for long days on technical ice.

Ultralight harnesses under 10 ounces and single ropes around 8.7mm are designed for light-and-fast alpine objectives where packability matters. For longer multi-pitch or more technical climbs consider extra slings or a beefier setup and verify UIAA/CE certifications and strength ratings like 22kN on harnesses.

Aluminum alloy and carbon-fiber shafts cut weight and reduce swing fatigue, which is handy for long approaches and repeated placements. Steel components, including crampons and wet-ice screws, offer greater durability and better tolerance for temperature swings in harsh conditions.
