Green Haul Bags

Match the bag volume to what you actually need to haul: haul packs at 1,500–3,000 cu in work for light-and-fast free ascents, small/medium 3,000–8,000 cu in handle everyday climbs and aid routes, and large 8,000–10,000 cu in excel for weeks-long big wall sieges. Models like the Metolius Half Dome offer 100L+ capacity when you need maximum volume.

Most haul bags include backpack straps plus removable shoulder harnesses and waist belts so you can switch between carrying and hauling without fuss. Also prioritize wide openings, compression straps, and reinforced haul loops to make loading and stabilizing heavy gear much easier.

Materials like Durathane deliver about ten times the abrasion resistance of standard nylon, and TPU polyamide composite with expanded polypropylene foam backing adds extra toughness on abrasive rock. Two-layer constructions and reinforced bottoms are designed to withstand long hauls — some bags tolerate roughly 1,000 feet of hauling with minimal scuffs.

For sport and short multi-pitch climbing, smaller haul packs or innovative lightweight options are ideal; the G7 22L Haul Pack, for example, carries about 12 quickdraws, two pairs of shoes, a puffy, and an 80m rope via its bungee system. These compact designs keep weight down while still letting you stash the essentials for fast, efficient moves.

Yes — look for the oil-drum cylindrical geometry and wide top openings that make stuffing big loads straightforward, plus compression straps and exterior bungee rope carry to keep gear stable on the ride. Heavier models like the Black Diamond Zion also feature robust haul loops and removable hauling straps to simplify big-wall shuttles.
