Green Trad Shoes

An aggressive, snug fit works best since trad shoes use low-volume, downturned lasts for precise edging and crack control. Try shoes 1–2 sizes down from street shoes and sample half sizes because European makers like La Sportiva and Scarpa run narrow and asymmetric.

Moccasins such as the Up Mocc excel at crack jams and feel natural on foot-shaped, slip-lasted constructions that allow better jamming. Stiffer lace-ups handle long, gear-heavy pitches and sustained edging, so choose moccasins for comfort and lace-ups for support.

They generally perform best on dry, vertical to overhanging rock where precise edging matters, and are less suited to smearing on slick slabs or gym bouldering. Trad models with 3–4/5 stiffness and 4–5mm XS Grip2 or Vision rubber prioritize edge hold over smear traction.

Unlined leather uppers offer breathability and conform to the foot, while lined synthetics limit stretch and provide more long-term support on long routes. Rubber randing, reinforced toes, and 3–5mm XS Grip2 or FriXion outsoles add abrasion resistance and sustained friction for trad climbing.

Mid-cut options like the Generator Mid or the stiffer TC Pro give added ankle support and a more stable platform for long approaches, aid hauling, and multi-pitch comfort. Save low-profile, sensitive models for short routes and precise edging where maximum toe dexterity matters.
