Green Ice Climbing Helmets

A shelled-foam helmet is usually best for ice climbing because its thick EPS or EPP foam core under a thin polycarbonate shell gives a closed, impact-focused design. Hard shells add longevity and hybrids blend foam types, but shelled-foam models minimize openings to protect from falling ice.

For ice climbing you want minimal ventilation area so falling ice and debris have fewer paths into the helmet, favoring closed designs over big cutouts. Warm-weather sport helmets prioritize airflow with larger vents, but an ice-specific model reduces exposure from above.

Comfort features like an adjustable headband, secure fit system, and helmet shape matter when you wear a helmet for hours in cold conditions. Models such as the Black Diamond Vapor and Trango Halo address different head shapes and include padding and adjustment options tailored for small heads.

Expanded polypropylene (EPP) delivers durable shock absorption and dimensional stability, while EPS focuses on hard-impact energy dissipation; ABS or polycarbonate outer shells resist denting and repeated impacts. Some helmets also use recycled DuraPET for a sustainable outer layer without sacrificing durability.

Verify that a helmet meets EN 12492 as a baseline and consider models that also carry UIAA 106 or dual certifications like PCSR-002 11.2019 for broader protection. The Smith Summit MIPS combines a MIPS liner for rotational-impact mitigation with climbing-specific certification to boost overall safety and comfort.
