Altra Run

Frequently Asked Questions

• What makes Altra’s FootShape™ toe box and Zero Drop platform different from other running shoes?

Altra’s Zero Drop platform (0 mm) places heel and forefoot at the same level to encourage a natural, neutral foot position and a midfoot or forefoot strike, while the FootShape™ toe box gives toes room to splay for improved stability and power during toe-off. Those features pair with Balanced Cushioning™ and the FootPod outsole to maintain alignment and let the shoe flex with your foot rather than forcing a narrow forefoot shape.
• How do the Torin 8 and Escalante compare for everyday training versus faster runs?

The Torin 8 is a generously cushioned neutral trainer using Ego Max compression-molded EVA for soft, long-distance comfort and is ideal for higher-mileage days. The Escalante is lighter and more responsive, designed for faster-paced runs and tempo efforts where a snappier ride is preferred.
• Which Altra models are best for trail running and technical terrain?

For technical trail use the Lone Peak 9+ is a go-to — it pairs Altra’s FootShape geometry with a Vibram Megagrip outsole for confident wet and dry traction on uneven ground. Look for trail-specific features like aggressive lugs, rock plate protection, and lower stack heights on other Lone Peak variants when you expect technical descents and scrambling.
• I overpronate — which Altra shoes offer stability features?

Altra’s Paradigm combines StabiliPod and GuideRail™ technologies to provide targeted midsole firmness and medial support that help control overpronation while maintaining a roomy toe box. Models with StabiliPod/GuideRail are best if you want support without traditional motion-control geometry; try them on with your usual running socks to assess comfort and alignment.
• How should I size and transition into zero-drop Altra shoes if I’m used to traditional running shoes?

Because Altra uses a wider FootShape™ toe box, many runners find their normal length still fits but may need to allow extra room for toe splay; try your usual size and check for ample forefoot space. If you’re new to zero-drop, increase mileage gradually over several weeks to strengthen calves and Achilles, or consider the AltraFWD Experience (4 mm drop) as an intermediate step.
