Climbing Helmets

Match the helmet type to your climbing style: hardshells use an ABS polycarbonate shell and suspension or a foam liner and are best for rugged mountaineering and ice where abrasion resistance matters. In-mold helmets have an EPS/EPP foam core under a thin polycarbonate shell for light weight and ventilation, while hybrids combine ABS over EPS/EPP foam for a balanced option—the Black Diamond Vision MIPS (220g) is a good all-around example.

Fit should be snug and sit low, covering the forehead about 1 inch above your eyebrows, with the chin strap tightened so the helmet doesn’t shift when you nod. Check headband size ranges from roughly 48–64 cm across XS to L, try adjustable dials or BOA systems, and confirm the helmet’s rear coverage and ponytail clearance for comfort.

Expect hardshell helmets to offer durability and a multi-year lifespan—often 5+ years—due to their abrasion-resistant ABS construction. Foam-based in-mold or hybrid helmets rely on EPS/EPP foam for impact absorption and should be retired after any significant impact, since the foam deforms to absorb force.

Look for EN 12492 and UIAA 106 certifications for mountaineering impact standards, and note that some helmets also carry ASTM F2040 or dual EN 1077 Class B skiing certification for added protection. MIPS and similar systems reduce rotational forces by about 15–40%, and models like the Smith Summit MIPS pair dual certification with that rotational-protection tech.

For warm-weather sport or alpine routes, in-mold helmets are a solid choice because they trade some abrasion durability for lower weight and better ventilation, often with 10–25 vents and overall weights in the 150–400 g range. If you want extra rear or side coverage for ski-style protection, consider hybrid or shelled options and Petzl models that emphasize extended coverage.
