A good rule is to match board volume to your weight and ability: beginners need more liters for float and paddle power while advanced riders can drop volume for maneuverability. Volumes span roughly 20 to 100+ liters across shapes, and performance shortboards like Torq PU models typically sit at the lower-volume, livelier end.

For small, mushy surf look to wider, lower-rocker shapes such as fish or mini Simmons in the 5–7 foot range because they plane early and hold speed. Channel Islands fish models and boards with notched tails are designed to stay loose and fast in 1–4 foot conditions while making paddling easier.

Soft-top funboards or high-volume minis around 7–8 feet are the most forgiving, offering stability and easier recovery after a wipeout. These boards combine durable soft-top construction and extra volume so you can focus on stance and timing instead of delicate repairs.

Materials change feel and durability: epoxy with EPS or XPS cores yields lighter, more buoyant boards that paddle easier, while traditional PU foam with fiberglass skins gives a bit more flex and is often easier to repair. Exotic layups like balsa, hemp, or Innegra add strength or different flex characteristics without changing basic dimensions.

Pick a gun when you’re paddling into large, fast waves—these shapes are long and narrow, commonly in the 7–12 foot range, to track and hold at speed. Tow-in boards are meant for massive, towed waves and pair with specific narrow rocker and fin setups to maintain control in extreme faces.
