For single-pitch days, a crag pack in the 30–40L range is usually enough to carry tools and a moderate load. For multi-day ice routes choose an alpine or mountaineering pack from about 35–52L (or up to 55L for heavier multi-day missions), while mini haul packs under 20L are best for fast technical routes.

A proper fit is low-profile and allows full mobility in a harness, so look for adjustable torso lengths from about 16–22 inches and contoured shoulder straps for freedom of movement. Hipbelt sizing is critical for load transfer—sizes run from XS/S to L/XL, and women-specific cuts reduce bulk around the chest and shoulders.

Dual ice axe loops with retention and dedicated rope tie-in points are the basics for on-route organization, while glove-friendly zippers and helmet stash pockets make access easier when your hands are cold. If you need rated attachments, check for certifications like UIAA for tool attachments or CE EN 564 for rope carry.
