PFDs

Whitewater-specific PFDs are built with robust, high-impact foam and mobility-focused cuts so you can swim, roll, and rescue without the vest riding up. Models like the NRS Vector and Stohlquist Ninja use abrasion-resistant panels and flex-tested construction to handle frequent hits and strain.

A touring PFD should have a streamlined profile and a thin-back geometry so it won’t interfere with high-back seats or your stroke. Look at thin-back designs like the NRS Oso or Nora and materials in the 200–420 denier range for a balance of durability and low bulk.

Women’s-specific cuts offer narrower shoulders and higher bust support—measure your chest and compare to sizes from XS (28–32 inches) up to XXL (50+ inches) for the best fit. Brands with female-focused models like Kokatat’s Layla and Naiad often include extra adjustability to keep the vest snug without restricting breathing.

Inflatable PFDs can be suitable offshore when they meet international standards; many inflatables have 100–300 Newton lift capacities and ISO 12402-5 ratings for use in international waters. For nearshore or rough conditions, also consider Type III inherently buoyant vests as a backup since they provide continuous flotation rated around 16–22 pounds.

Durable PFDs use 200–420 denier nylon or polyester shells with PVC-free Gaia or TPU coatings, plus closed-cell foam for long-lasting flotation. Double-stitched seams, heavy-duty zippers, and abrasion-resistant panels—features tested for 50,000+ flex cycles on whitewater models—help prevent premature wear from frequent use.
