Fishing PFDs

Start by matching the PFD type to where you fish: Type I is for offshore, rough waters and offers about 22 pounds of buoyancy, while Type II and III provide roughly 15.5 pounds for nearshore and inland use. Type V covers specialized fishing hybrids and must be worn as designed to meet Coast Guard requirements.

For casting freedom look for low-profile, contoured chest designs and reinforced shoulders that reduce interference; Type III fishing vests are popular for this reason. Brands like Onyx and Stearns make fishing-specific vests with streamlined pockets and adjustable straps to keep gear accessible without bulk.

Foam PFDs use closed-cell foam and give constant inherent buoyancy with minimal maintenance, but they can feel bulky during long days. Inflatable and hybrid designs use ripstop nylon and inflatable chambers or CO2 cartridges to stay slim, and hybrids add foam for baseline flotation when you want a balance of comfort and safety.

Automatic systems either deploy a CO2 cartridge on water entry or rely on hydrostatic sensors that trigger inflation under water pressure, providing near-instant flotation when submerged. Many premium fishing models, including some Mustang Survival designs, pair those systems with manual pull cords so you have redundancy.

A proper fit is snug across the chest and adjustable at the shoulders and waist so the PFD won’t shift in the water or ride up, and it shouldn’t restrict casting motion. Look for contoured, low-profile Type III or Type V fishing vests with well-placed pockets and straps to keep tackle handy while maintaining the 15.5–22 pounds of buoyancy required for the design.
