Women's Purple Technical Shell Jackets

If you expect wet, windy alpine days pick a hardshell with full waterproofing like Gore-Tex Pro or a 20K/20K membrane; models such as the Arc'teryx Beta AR offer that rugged protection and climbing mobility. Softshells excel on high-output, milder-weather efforts where breathability outweighs full waterproofing.

When sizing, leave room for a midlayer so movement isn't restricted; a 2.5-layer shell often offers stretch and packability while still fitting over insulation. Articulated elbows, gussets, and asymmetric cuffs help maintain mobility and comfort under a pack.

In general, 2-layer shells use a protective liner and are lighter while 2.5-layer shells favor packability for uphill touring. 3-layer shells bond face fabric, membrane, and backer for durability and abrasion resistance; Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro is an example of a rugged 3-layer build.

Most helmet-compatible hoods adjust to fit over a helmet and cinch down for skiing, and longer-cut shells often include snow skirts to keep out powder. Models like the Flylow Billie Coat pair a helmet-compatible hood with a 20K/20K Surface fabric and seamless shoulders to stay comfortable under a pack.

For uphill touring and high-output days prioritize breathability and low weight; pit zips or mesh vents and a 2.5-layer or ultralight shell under 20 ounces help shed heat. Also favor windproof membranes and a PFAS-free DWR to handle variable conditions.
