Match the chain speed to your drivetrain by choosing 11-, 12-, or 13-speed chains that correspond to your cassette and derailleur. KMC chains are broadly compatible with Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo systems, while Dura-Ace/XTR 12-speed options are specifically built for Shimano setups.

Waxed chains reduce friction and can improve efficiency during sustained aero efforts; models like the KMC TT12 or Silca Pre-Waxed are optimized for 12-speed TT setups. They tend to shine on smooth roads where low drag matters, as frictionless treatments have shown lower drag in testing.

Chromoly (chromium-molybdenum) chains give you lighter strength and better stretch resistance, and titanium options cut weight further for competitive TT racing. Save standard steel chains for mixed training and rougher surfaces where durability and affordability are more important than minimal grams.

Measure chain length by counting links and matching to your drivetrain—common examples like 118L or 126L provide a starting point but final length depends on frame geometry and largest cog. Plan to use a PowerLock connector when trimming and rejoining 11/12/13-speed chains for a clean, secure link.

Flat-top chains are a distinct design; SRAM Force E1 Flattop is made for flattop systems and Apex Flat Top 12-speed is another flattop example for road/TT use. Confirm compatibility notes before buying, since some high-end 12-speed models such as Shimano Dura‑Ace/XTR follow different standards and may not be interchangeable.
