Brown Sleeping

Down excels on dry, lightweight trips because of its superior warmth-to-weight and compressibility, while synthetic insulation holds loft better in damp conditions. For three-season use many people choose a 20–30 degree down bag for warmth, switching to synthetic models if rain or wet camps are likely.

Aim for an R-value of 3.5 or higher for cold-weather or shoulder-season use, since reflective materials or internal foam can boost insulation. Therm-a-Rest inflatable pads with R-value over 3.5 are popular for backpacking, while closed-cell foam from Sea to Summit offers puncture-proof durability on rough trails.

Quilts can replace mummy bags on warm three-season trips when you prioritize weight savings and versatility, and models like Enlightened Equipment convert from blanket to mummy for that flexibility. Consider a quilt with pad attachment straps if you move a lot in your sleep to keep it secure.

A bivy sack makes sense when minimalist weight and a tiny footprint are top priorities, especially for fastpacking, bikepacking, or squeezing shelter onto rocky ledges or in snow caves. Expect far less living space than a tent and look for reliable waterproofing if you’ll face wet conditions.

Match pad length and width to your height and sleeping position; thru-hikers often choose a 3/4-length pad to leave room for a pack at their feet, while side-sleepers may prefer a full-length, wider pad. For sleeping bags, pick a mummy shape for thermal efficiency or a rectangular cut for roominess, and check temperature ratings like a 20-degree bag for three-season warmth.
