Brown Hammocks

If you prefer a lighter, cocoon-like setup for hiking or warm-weather forest camps, a gathered-end hammock uses an asymmetrical shape and needs a smaller tarp. Bridge hammocks use spreader bars for a flatter platform that suits side-sleepers and lounging, though they tend to be bulkier.

Evaluate your body size and how much room you want to move—single nests fit one person while double designs give extra width and room to share; models like the Roo Double list capacities up to 500 lbs. Also consider head-end width and diagonal lying for gathered-end models to avoid shoulder squeeze.

Suspension options such as whoopie slings, webbing straps, or no-knot systems change how the hammock sag and tension feel, so try the system with your weight if possible. Many hammocks are built to around 350-400 lb capacity, and choosing a strap or whoopie that matches that rating keeps setup stable and comfortable.

For long-distance trips, ultralight systems like the ENO SubLink or the Dream Hammock Darien UL (about 13 oz) cut pack weight and simplify shelter choices. Car camping or backyard setups can use heavier, more comfortable full systems or spreader-bar bridge models and even full-featured tents like the Kammok Mantis for more room and integrated storage.

In cold conditions add an underquilt and a weatherproof tarp—Warbonnet Blackbird setups pair well with underquilts and offer winter-ready options, and tarps such as the ProFly increase protection from wind and rain. Also look for hammocks with compatible bug nets and enough internal room to fit insulation without compressing loft.
