Green Shovels

Match the shovel to your typical trips: ultralight models like the BCA Dozer 1T-UL or Voile Hoback T Mini (around 710g) are best for fast alpine tours and ski mountaineering, while standard telescoping shovels suit general backcountry skiing and rescue. Heavy-duty options such as the BCA Dozer 2H or 2D are better for professional snow analysis and prying in dense snow.

Think about how you carry gear: most shovels collapse to about 22–30 inches for backpack storage, so confirm that collapsed length fits your pack or shovel sleeve. Also note extended lengths up to 39 inches provide more leverage when digging or prying, so balance packability against on-snow performance.

Hoe-mode shovels excel at efficient snow shearing and industrial digging, making them a great choice for fast pit work or shaping large features. Models like the Voile Hoback and Mammut Alugator Ride 3.0 offer hoe functionality and remain light enough for backcountry use, with weights in the 710–858g range for the Hoback.

Bigger blades move more snow per scoop and speed shoveling during rescues or when building jumps; blade sizes on this category range from mini 10 x 9.7 inches up to standard 11.7 x 10 inches. If you often build large features, a large-capacity shovel such as the BCA Dozer 3D will save time, but be aware it sacrifices packability.

Aluminum blades and segmented or telescoping aluminum shafts dominate for strength-to-weight and durability, and they handle prying and dense snow better than plastic, which is considered unsuitable for rescue. Look for features like ovo-concave shafts, low-profile stompable edges, serrated sides, or cored-out handles for weight savings without compromising pry strength.
