Snow Study

The BCA Snow Study Kit is a good starter because it bundles core tools like a 10x loupe, aluminum crystal card, slope meter, and thermometer in a flat-lay case. It keeps essentials together for practice pits and avalanche training without needing to assemble individual pieces.

Most backcountry users carry a 2-meter ruler or probe for reliable layer profiling; the BCA 2 Meter Snow Ruler is built precisely for that purpose. Carrying a compact probe alongside the ruler keeps your kit portable while letting you measure deep layers.

To get accurate readings, take the slope meter at multiple spots across the slope and average the values, since 30–45 degree slopes are where most avalanches occur. Many slope meters and inclinometers measure up to 60 degrees, so use a combined slope meter-thermometer unit if you want temperature and angle in one go.

Tools are built from weather-resistant materials like aluminum blades and polycarbonate crystal cards, and many kits include rugged cases to protect gear in harsh conditions. You’ll also see durable additions like knotted 2mm cordelette for extended tests, which help them withstand repeated field use.

For column and hand shear tests you’ll want a snow saw sized for column cuts, a crystal card and 8x–15x loupe for grain ID, plus a knotted cordelette for extended tests. Pro-level kits like the Snowmetrics PRO 1 include these focused tools so you can run repeatable column tests efficiently.
