Green Probes

Think about expected burial depth and how much weight you’ll carry. For most users a 240–260cm probe balances burial reach and pack weight, while 300–320cm models work better for deep snow or professional snowpack work. Also consider collapsed packability around 45cm so it fits in your ski or snowboard pack.

Carbon probes shave grams—some fall as low as about 170g—so they’re ideal for ultra-light ski missions. Aluminum provides a balanced mix of weight and toughness (many models sit over 250g) and is popular for guides and test pits. Steel offers superior penetration and wear resistance for frantic rescues.

Collapsed length determines whether a probe fits your pack; common folded sizes are about 45cm or 15–18 inches. Those compact lengths generally slide into ski-pack sleeves, so confirm the probe’s collapsed measurement and your pack’s storage space before buying.

Check the spec sheet for UIAA Standard 157 to verify a probe’s rescue-strength testing and mechanical load rating. Models like the BCA Stealth 300 Carbon are noted for UIAA compliance and fast deployment, which helps if you need a probe that’s been tested for rescue loads.

Rapid deployment systems such as quick-lock or speed-lock shave crucial seconds, while color-coded depth markings—neon orange to 40cm and blue to 80cm—make victim proximity easier to judge. Steel tips improve penetration in firm snow, and durable aluminum options like the Mammut Probe 320 Speed Lock combine those rescue features with a long 320cm reach.
