Orange Road Bike Helmets

Aero helmets like the Specialized S-Works Evade 3 trade ventilation for speed with a streamlined shell and fewer vents, so they work best for time trials or high-intensity rides in cooler conditions. Standard road helmets have multiple vents and better airflow for longer rides and general road use.

A proper fit means the front edge sits about one to two finger-widths above your eyebrows and the helmet remains level on your head. Look for helmets with an adjustable fit system or BOA-style adjustments to fine-tune position and accommodate ponytails for a secure, comfortable fit.

These systems address rotational forces differently: MIPS uses a low-friction liner that allows relative movement, WaveCel employs a honeycombed crumple zone to absorb energy, and POC’s SPIN uses silicone-injected pads that move inside the shell. Consider which system is used on models you like since the implementation varies by helmet.

Carbon-fiber models such as the Met Trenta 3K Carbon MIPS often achieve lower weight while maintaining strong safety performance by pairing composite outer layers with an EPS foam liner. Most helmets still use EPS foam under a thin polyvinyl shell, so carbon options mainly provide a lighter shell and different strength-to-weight characteristics.

For commuting, prioritize comfort, decent ventilation, and weather protection—examples like the Kask Sintesi offer versatile styling and Kask’s WG11 rotational impact protection that suits mixed use. Also look for adjustable fit systems and multiple vents to balance airflow with everyday comfort.
