Orange Mountain Bikes

Match travel to terrain: XC and downcountry favor efficient 100–120mm travel for climbing and light trails, trail bikes sit around 130–160mm for all-around riding, and enduro bikes use 150–180mm for rough descents. If you fall between categories, test-ride to see how a bike pedals and tracks before deciding.

Measure standover height, top tube length, and consider your reach, then take a test ride to confirm comfort and handling. Hardtail XC bikes like the Polygon Xtrada often feel different in reach and standover than slacker trail or enduro frames, so compare geometry when sizing up.

Aluminum frames are typically tougher and more impact resistant for enduro and DH use, while carbon fiber saves weight and increases stiffness. XC bikes can be under 25 lbs, so carbon builds often help on long climbs, whereas aluminum favors durability on rough terrain.

Many trail and enduro riders prefer a dropper post for better control on steep descents and a wide-range 1x drivetrain for simpler shifting on varied terrain. Bikes built for aggressive riding, like the Polygon Collosus N9 with about 170mm of travel, commonly include those features alongside progressive geometry.

Fat Bikes with very wide tires provide the flotation and extra grip needed for snow and sand, making them a better choice than standard trail or XC bikes in soft conditions. They prioritize stability over speed, so choose a dedicated fat or leisure model if you plan to ride regularly on those surfaces.
