Hardtail Bike Frames

Think about where you'll ride most and how aggressive you want to go. XC frames with 100–120mm fork travel favor climbs and efficient pedaling, while enduro hardtails with 140–160mm excel on steep descents and jumps.

Aluminum offers stiff, lightweight durability with rust resistance and shaped tubes for power transfer, while carbon delivers the best stiffness-to-weight with some frames under 2 lbs for racing. Chromoly provides extra vibration damping and repairability for long rough rides, and titanium builds—like Thomson's—bring lightness and lifelong smoothness.

Yes, 29-inch hardtail frames are commonly chosen for versatility, offering better rollover and stability across mixed trails and XC. Models like the Ibis DV9 are built around 29-inch use and pair well with a Fox 34 fork for everything from pump tracks to longer cross-country efforts.

Match frame reach and stack to your height and preferred position, and pay attention to geometry details: steeper head tube angles around 68–70 degrees suit XC climbing, while slack angles at 66 degrees or less improve enduro stability. Test riding is important to ensure the forward-leaning stance and chainstay length feel comfortable and controllable.

For XC choose about 100–120mm of travel, trail hardtails typically use 120–140mm, and hardcore enduro models run 140–160mm to handle bigger hits and jumps. Verify frame and fork compatibility since more travel boosts descending capability but can reduce pedaling efficiency.
