Men's Yellow Jackets

Think about the conditions: down and puffer jackets with 550–800 fill power trap heat for cold, static use, while synthetic insulated pieces like the Patagonia Nano Puff use about 60g of synthetic insulation for lightweight, damp-tolerant warmth. Softshells are better for mild, active days where wind resistance and stretch matter.

For rainy commuting and day hiking, aim for a 10,000–20,000mm hydrostatic head and breathability around 10,000–15,000g/m2/24hrs to keep you dry without overheating. Models such as the Arc'teryx Beta AR with a Gore-Tex Pro shell or jackets with seam-sealed construction handle sustained wet weather comfortably.

Packable windbreakers and lightweight synthetics compress best; the Patagonia Nano Puff's 10D nylon shell and 60g insulation are designed to stuff into a pocket. Look for thin shells or packable puffer designs that prioritize low bulk over heavy 800-fill insulation.

Size up slightly if you plan heavy layering, especially with parkas rated for -30C or down jackets featuring 800-fill down like Summit Series pieces. A regular or athletic cut gives mobility while leaving room for midlayers, and check sleeve length and torso geometry to keep warmth sealed.

Softshells are generally better for active alpine use when you need wind resistance, stretch, and ventilation features like pit zips to manage exertion. Windbreakers still win for ultra-light packability and short, high-output efforts where full water protection isn't required.
