If you want speed on technical singletrack up to about 20 miles, low-cut trail running shoes with 25-35mm stack and lightweight builds (8-16 oz) are ideal. Hiking boots are better for multi-day treks with heavy packs and rocky, muddy trails, while approach shoes bridge the gap for scrambling and light climbs.

A snug heel with about 1 cm of toe room lets your feet swell without jamming the toes, and a wider toe box helps prevent blisters on descents. Heat-molded heel counters and no-sew uppers improve long-term comfort and durability on multi-day routes.

Gore-Tex membranes provide strong waterproofing—rated up to about 20,000mm—while still offering breathability, but they’re generally less airy than lightweight mesh uppers with TPU overlays. For highly aerobic efforts in wet conditions you might prefer a trail runner with breathable mesh, or a Gore-Tex model if staying dry on muddy terrain is top priority.

Lightweight approach shoes with sticky rubber and a low-profile, grippy outsole perform best for scrambling; models like the La Sportiva TX4 use FriXion rubber designed for edging on rock. If you expect mixed trails and short climbs, look for reinforced randing and a torsionally stable midsole to protect your feet on technical steps.

Higher stack heights (toward 33mm) give more cushioning and a plush ride, while lower stack and a modest drop promote a more natural gait—drops on these shoes commonly range 4-8mm. The Hoka Speedgoat 6, for example, pairs a 33mm stack with a 5mm drop to balance softness and forward roll.
