Measure chest and height and allow a little extra room so layers fit comfortably; leaving about an inch at the chest or underarm usually gives enough space for a base layer plus a fleece. Try the garment over the insulating layer you plan to wear and adjust based on sleeve length and overall mobility.

For active play, breathable polyester or polyester-spandex blends wick moisture and dry quickly, while merino works well for odor control on longer outings. Brands like Patagonia often use these materials in kids' tees and baselayers, making them easy to wash and wear.

Look for a waterproof membrane, fully taped seams, and an adjustable hood to keep rain out, plus a durable nylon or polyester shell that withstands backpacks. Venting options like pit zips and a longer rear hem add comfort during active days.

For regular cold-weather play, a lightweight synthetic-insulated jacket offers warmth even when damp, while down is a good choice for very dry, cold conditions; assess compressibility and loft for packability. The North Face and similar makers offer kid-specific fits and adjustable hems to trap heat without restricting movement.

Leggings in stretch polyester-spandex blends are great for climbing and running because they move with the child and layer well under snow pants, while zip-off convertible pants work best for hiking and travel where variable temps demand flexibility. Check waist fit and inseam length to ensure comfort whether you're wearing tights or zip-off pant legs.
