Blue Climbing Training

It depends on your goals: hangboards are best for isometric finger work and portability, with many models offering four to eight grip positions in compact builds under 20 inches wide. For route variety and progressive bouldering, MoonBoard supplies pre-set problems at standardized grades while the Kilter Board adds app-controlled, LED holds and a library of over 170,000 user problems for adjustable-angle training.

Kilter Boards use motorized holds with integrated LED lighting and require a solid wall structure plus an electrical hookup to power the electronics. Installers should plan for adjustable mounting and an angle range consistent with dynamic wall systems, which commonly operate around 40 to 50 degrees.

Sizing hinges on grip variety and finger hole geometry—pick a board with multiple grip types so you can progress from larger jugs to smaller crimps and pockets. Many compact hangboards, including Teknik-style models, offer four to eight grip positions and widths under 20 inches, while crimp sizes typically range from about 16 to 25 millimeters to suit different hand sizes.

Portable and wooden hangboards can be very durable when made from quality materials like wood or reinforced plastic and mounted with a strong mounting system. Construction typically supports loads in the 200 to 400 pound range depending on the model, so check the board’s build and mounting recommendations for sustained use.

App-based systems commonly log workout data and workout history while assigning standardized problem difficulty ratings to routes you climb. Kilter’s app also links to its interactive LED holds and problem library, and MoonBoard systems provide pre-programmed problems and grade tracking for repeatable training sessions.
