Blue Holds

Start by matching hold types to the skill you want to build: jugs give big, wraparound grips for beginners and rest points, while pockets only fit a few fingers and raise difficulty. Mix in crimps, slopers, and pinches to develop specific finger and body-tension skills as you progress.

Polyurethane resin is a common choice because it offers good grip and long-term durability, while fiberglass and polyethylene are used for strength and texture retention. Wooden holds give a natural feel and are gentler on skin, so pick the material that balances grip and wear for your wall.

Hold sets commonly range from about 12 to 60 pieces, so a 12-pack like the Metolius Boulder Climbing Hold Set is great for route variety while larger packs help fill a whole wall. Think about how many different shapes you want—small packs let you craft specific problems, while big sets offer full coverage and more route options.

Textured holds provide extra friction and reward good footwork and control, making them ideal when technique matters, whereas smooth holds demand precise finger placement and stronger body tension on harder routes. Slopers and pinches favor open-hand strength and balance, while crimps and edges emphasize finger power.

Yes. The Beastmaker 2000 hangboard is a notable option designed for serious training and targets finger strength with varied edge depths and grip positions suitable for advanced routines. Pair it with a progressive plan and proper warm-ups to reduce injury risk.
