Yellow Climbing Shoes

For sizing, performance shoes usually fit tight, often 1 to 2 sizes down from street shoes, and women-specific versions offer narrower heels and lower volume. Lace-ups let you fine-tune fit for long trad sessions, while slippers prioritize quick on-off for bouldering.

Geometry matters: flat neutral soles and stiffer midsoles give the edging support you need on vertical faces. Aggressive downturns with sensitive uppers excel on overhangs; models like the Scarpa Drago are built for that steep sensitivity.

Sticky compounds such as Vibram XS Edge or Mad Rock Xtreme Friction improve traction, and durometers around 68–72 Shore A balance stickiness with wear. Also consider midsole stiffness—stiffer midsoles help with precise edging while thicker 4–5mm rubber layers boost long-term durability.

Choose approach shoes when your outing involves hiking to a crag, mixed terrain, or scrambling and you need breathable protection and hiking traction. Mountaineering boots are better for glacier travel and high‑altitude ascents where insulation, rigidity, and crampon compatibility matter.

Shoes with finned heels and a concave sole profile give the most secure heel hooks and volume grabs on overhung problems. Scarpa Drago is known for top sensitivity, while Mad Rock Drone Comp combines a finned heel with Xtreme Friction rubber for aggressive bouldering.
