Sport & Bouldering Shoes

Most climbers size sport-bouldering shoes 1–2 sizes down from street shoes for precise toe placement, and aggressive models will feel tighter with less padding. Sizing varies by brand and many use European half-sizes, so trying a pair or checking each model's fit is helpful.

For precise edging, firmer rubbers like XS Edge and a stiffer midsole help hold micro-edges, while softer compounds such as Vibram XS Grip2 (often around 3.5mm) provide better smear performance. Look for rubber ratings in the 65–70 durometer range if you need a balance between stickiness and edge support.

Velcro pairs are fastest to take on and off for quick gym or boulder sessions, while lace-up styles offer the most adjustable, secure fit for longer climbs or varied terrain. Slip-ons and low-profile slippers give superior sensitivity for smearing but can be softer and wear faster on cracks.

If you're tackling steep boulder problems or overhung sport routes, aggressive downturned models deliver extra toe power for small holds. Moderate cambered shoes like the La Sportiva Skwama are versatile for gym climbing, slabs, and cracks, while neutral all-rounders work best for long days and multi-pitch trad; the Scarpa Chimera is an example built for downturned power on mixed angles.

Soft smearing slippers deliver high sensitivity but tend to wear faster on cracks and rough edges. Hybrid uppers, reinforced rands, and robust stitching increase durability in edging-focused shoes, and materials like leather or synthetic microsuede generally hold up better over time.
