For short, dry day trips a 15–30L day pack handles minimal gear and stays compact for technical moves. If you plan multi-pitch rappels, pack tosses, or abrasive terrain, move up to a reinforced 30–50L or 60–70L pack—models like the Imlay Kolob use canyoneering-specific geometry for that work.

Durable fabrics like abrasion-resistant ballistic nylon, heavy-duty Cordura, or Challenge Ultra 400 hold up best against rock and rope contact. Many packs also use Spectra or PVC/TPU-coated tarpaulin and reinforce edges or bottoms with Shoe Goo for extra longevity.

Drybags and sealed kegs are designed to protect electronics and clothing, with kegs often fully sealed while drybags rely on coated nylon or TPU for high water resistance. Stow small electronics in a dedicated dry compartment, and choose a sealed keg when you expect full immersion or prolonged water exposure.

A proper fit centers on matching your torso length to the pack geometry so the load rides low and stays stable during rappels and pack passes. Women’s-specific cuts like the Tempest 26L can improve fit, and packs with multiple handles and clips make grabs and transitions easier.

Avoid external mesh pockets, loose straps, or dangling hip-belt attachments that can catch on rock or rope during a descent. Many canyoneering-specific packs, such as the Superior Wilderness Designs Wolverine or Imlay Kolob, minimize external pockets and include grommets and drain holes to reduce snag and wear.
