Look for long search range, multiple-burial marking, and reliable battery life; EN certifications like EN 300 and EN 16717 are common on secure models. Backcountry Access beacons offer up to a 70m search radius and many models use rechargeable batteries rated around 200–400 hours.

Airbag packs make the most sense for steep, consequential slopes or any high-risk ski touring where avalanche burial is possible. The Black Diamond Jetforce Pro 35L, for example, uses a 3kg rechargeable fan, and choosing a pack in the 20–40L range helps balance gear capacity with proper torso fit.

Pick a probe that reaches deep enough for likely burial depths but packs down small for fast movement and carry. Collapsible probes that extend 240–300cm and collapse to about one-third their length with clear depth markings are a practical choice in aluminum or carbon.

Go with an aluminum blade around 40–60cm for durability and snow-cutting performance, and choose serrated or pointed edges if you expect hard snow layers. Ergonomic T-grips or D-grips improve leverage and glove use, and reinforced frames stand up to heavy digging demands.

Use a snow saw to isolate and test layers, and a slope meter to measure steepness before committing to a line. Slope meters that read 30–45° angles give you quick context for risk, while snow saws plus snow study kits let you perform more detailed stability tests in changing winter conditions.
