Convertible helmets can be safe for enduro when the chin bar is securely attached, as they combine half-shell versatility with full-face protection for bike park or aggressive descents. Favor models that pair a removable chin bar with rotational protection like MIPS or Wavecel for added oblique-impact management.

Expect varied trade-offs: lightweight cross-country shells can be as light as about 250g with lots of vents, while full-face downhill shells can weigh 1200g or more and use fewer, larger openings. Materials like EPS liners and polycarbonate or carbon fiber shells influence both airflow and overall mass, so choose based on how much climbing versus descending you do.

Look for ASTM F1952 for downhill racing and the common CPSC or EN 1078 standards for general use; many modern helmets also meet e-bike requirements and include rotational systems like MIPS Integra Split. Models such as Smith Mainline combine Koroyd and MIPS with ASTM DH certification, and race-focused designs like the Speedframe RS have higher Virginia Tech ratings for extra confidence.
