Women's Orange Technical Shells Pants

Hard shells with 2.5–3-layer GORE-TEX and fully taped seams are best for heavy snow, wind, and deep powder. Soft shells use DWR-treated fabrics for breathability on variable resort days or spring slush. Packable shells trade some waterproofing for low weight and stowability, making them good for cross-country or transitional weather.

Opt for a relaxed freeride cut with a higher waistband and articulated knees if you layer thermal baselayers and need room over a snowboard boot. Make sure pants include adjustable waist tabs, elastic straps, and boot gaiters or reinforced cuffs to seal over boots. Sizes generally range XS to XL, so try layering options to dial in clearance.

For truly wet, cold days choose a GORE-TEX hard shell with taped seams and a 3-layer laminate for maximum waterproofing. Models like the Norrøna Lofoten GORE-TEX Pro add Kevlar cuffs and abrasion-resistant fabrics for extended protection in stormy backcountry conditions.

Thigh vents let you dump heat quickly during hard ascents, especially when paired with large YKK mesh zippers for airflow. Three-layer laminates like ePE or GORE-TEX provide superior waterproofing but can be less ventilating, so breathable technologies such as 37.5 help move moisture. Open vents on climbs to avoid overheating.

Yes, packable shells are great for cross-country touring and hiking when you need light, stowable protection against moderate precipitation. They typically weigh around 1.1 lbs per pair and collapse into a pack pocket, though they trade the full waterproofing of a 3-layer GORE-TEX like the Arc'teryx Sentinel. Bringing a packable layer can save weight and space on long outings.
