Mechanical shifters are cable-actuated and favor simplicity and low maintenance, with lightweight designs like SRAM’s R2C and Campagnolo’s Back to Zero that return to center after shifting. Electronic systems trade simplicity for speed and consistency, which can help you stay aero and maintain power during races.

Electronic TT shifters let you change gears from aerobars or base bars without repositioning your hands, which is useful on technical or hilly courses. Systems such as Shimano Di2 and SRAM eTAP AXS allow shift buttons to be mounted in multiple locations so you can stay in your ideal position.

Electronic groupsets run on rechargeable batteries and require a charger, shift switches, and electronic derailleurs rather than cable adjustments. SRAM eTAP AXS uses fully wireless battery modules, while Shimano Di2 typically uses wired battery packs with a charging port.

Because SRAM’s eTAP AXS transmits via Bluetooth Low Energy, it often simplifies installation by eliminating internal wiring and junction boxes. Shimano Di2 is a wired system that usually needs cable routing and junction hardware, which can be more involved but integrates neatly when frames are set up for it.

Modern electronic groupsets most commonly use 12-speed drivetrains, and SRAM’s eTAP AXS features a Flattop Chain and XD‑R-compatible cassettes that can accept a ten-tooth small cog for a wider range. Shimano and Campagnolo also offer 12-speed TT lines, so check compatibility with your chain and cassette standard.
