Gray Triathlon / TT Bike Cleats & Small Parts

Road cleats use a three-bolt attachment and cover more sole area for maximum power transfer, which suits paved triathlon courses. Mountain bike cleats are two-bolt, sit lower on the sole and protrude less, so they make transitions and running out of T1 simpler.

Moving cleats rearward by 10 to 20 millimeters shifts pressure off the calves and can reduce pedal-to-heel distance by 15 to 20 percent, which often lets you lower saddle height by about 17 millimeters. Midsole positioning produces similar effects at a larger scale, with reported saddle height reductions of 30 to 35 millimeters for improved aerodynamics and cornering stability.

Yes. Two-bolt mountain cleats protrude less from the shoe sole, so they'll feel more comfortable to run in between bike and run legs and reduce the risk of catching the sole on the ground. That smaller cleat profile is why some triathlon shoes accept two-bolt systems for faster, easier transitions.

Fast-drying mesh uppers and sole drainage holes let water and sweat evacuate quickly during a wet exit, while wide Velcro straps and extended heel loops speed on-off time in T1. Many triathlon-specific models from Pearl Izumi and Giro also include user-replaceable heel bumpers to extend shoe life after repeated race wear.

Shimano SPD-SL is the most common road system among triathletes, and its yellow cleats are noted for offering maximum float for knee comfort. Riders also choose SRAM or Campagnolo-compatible road systems, and shoes typically prioritize stiff soles and weights in the 150 to 250 gram range per shoe for efficient power transfer.
