Triathlon / TT Bike Aerobars

Clip-on aero bars attach to standard road bike handlebars and are the most versatile option for triathlons, long rides, gravel, touring, and bikepacking because they’re portable and transferable. Integrated tri bars and full aero handlebars are built into TT frames or complete cockpits to maximize aerodynamics for time trials and long-distance triathlons, though they’re less transferable.

Set your forearm rests roughly 1.5–5 inches apart and adjust arm extension and stem angle until your forearms sit naturally on the pads. Flip the stem upward for a more relaxed setup and check that the forearm rest padding minimizes wrist and elbow fatigue on longer efforts.

Aero positions excel on flats and non-technical downhills for reducing drag but can feel unstable on steep climbs, technical descents, or in high winds. Stay on the drops or hoods in those situations and use the tucked aero position only in steady, low-wind sections.

Carbon construction, particularly high-modulus examples like the 3T Apto at about 486 g, lowers weight and smooths airflow for improved aerodynamics and handling. Remember that clip-ons prioritize portability while integrated carbon cockpits trade some transferability for increased stiffness and durability.

R-bend bars typically put you in a narrower, more forward tuck while j-bend options often feel more familiar coming from drop-bar hand positions; models like the Vision Metron TFA and Trimax Carbon Clip-On show those differences. Aim for a narrow base around 30 cm if you want a constant aero tuck, and prioritize padded rests to reduce forearm fatigue on long rides.
