Towers & Foot Packs

Check your roof type first: older cars with rain gutters need gutter-mounted feet, modern vehicles with flush side rails use podium-style feet, and factory roof tracks call for track-mounted towers. Most foot packs come in sets of four and manufacturers provide vehicle compatibility charts by make, model, and year to confirm fit.

Think about the height of the cargo you plan to carry: some foot packs, like the Thule Rapid Gutter High Footpack, offer about 8 inches of vertical clearance which helps fit roof boxes and fork-mounted bikes. Measure the combined height of your crossbars and accessories to ensure there’s enough room for your specific cargo.

Hybrid construction—resin or polymer exterior shells with steel internal structural components—combines corrosion resistance with strength, reducing the chance of rust while maintaining load-bearing capacity. Also look for weather sealing at the mounting points to prevent water intrusion and protect your vehicle’s roof.

Most standard foot pack sets support vehicle roof weight limits in the 100 to 150 pound range, but exact capacity varies by model and vehicle. Confirm both your vehicle’s roof load limit and the rack’s rated capacity—examples like Thule’s Podium 460 series list specific ratings you should follow.

Models designed for aero compatibility pair with low-profile crossbars to preserve fuel efficiency, while track-mounted towers attach directly to factory-installed roof tracks for heavier-duty use. Yakima’s TrackTower is an example of a direct-to-track solution, and many podium or aero foot packs accommodate rectangular or rapid aero bars.
