Black Stuff & Compression Sacks

Roll-top dry bags are best for wet conditions and lightweight down sleeping bags or quilts because their water-resistant rolling closures help keep moisture out. For maximum waterproofing, DCF roll-tops like the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Roll-Top are ideal, while compression sacks are better for shaving bulk from synthetic sleeping bags and jackets on extended trips.

Match the sack volume to your sleeping bag's packed volume; most backpacking bags fit into 8L–20L compression sacks. If you want an ultralight option, Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil models compress exceptionally well, and sizes range from about 6L (6x15in) up to 43L (12x23in) to cover most needs.

Purgeable stuff sacks are designed for ultralight down gear and allow air to escape without drawing moisture back in, so they are a good choice for packing down insulation. Many come in lightweight fabrics like 20D–40D silnylon or Dyneema Composite Fabric and weigh as little as 0.2–2.7oz, which suits minimalist backpacking.

Heavier weaves such as 30D Cordura and silicone-coated nylon ripstop provide better puncture and abrasion resistance on rocky trails. Models with reinforced straps, seam taping, and fabrics like Granite Gear eVent Sil tend to score higher on durability in field testing.

Many compression sacks and hybrid packing pods convert to a pillow or keep clothing organized, with rectangular pods made specifically for neat packing and quick access. Picking the right volume matters—sizes from 2.5L to 43L and common volumes of 3–30L let you choose a sack that also works as a camp pillow or organizational pod.
