Purple Mountaineering Helmets

Hardshells use an ABS outer shell and thin foam, so they excel at durability for rough alpine approaches, while in‑mold helmets use thicker EPS or polypropylene foam for lighter weight and better ventilation on long days. Hybrids pair a hard crown with foam interior to balance protection and comfort, and models like the Black Diamond Vision Mips illustrate that compromise while adding rotational protection.

Most mountaineering helmets come in two to three size ranges, such as small/medium and medium/large, and adjustable suspension webbing helps accommodate a hood or thin beanie. Make sure the internal cradle or foam padding sits snugly without pressure points so the helmet stays put during movement and under a hood.

Most mountaineering helmets meet EN 12492 certification for crown and side impacts, and some premium models carry dual EN 12492 and EN1077/B certification for alpine skiing as well. If you need broader protection for mixed climbing and ski touring, look for dual-certified models like the Smith Summit Mips.

EPP foam is known for durability and can tolerate multiple low‑energy impacts, whereas EPS foam is lighter but tends to degrade after a single significant impact. The Petzl Sirocco Ultralight, for example, combines EPS under the crown with EPP on the sides to balance weight and multi‑impact resilience.

For long mountain days you’ll likely prefer in‑mold helmets that sit near the low end of the typical 160–280 gram weight range and offer better ventilation for sustained effort. Lighter, well‑ventilated designs are ideal for ski mountaineering and multi‑pitch climbing where breathability and low mass matter most.
