For deep rims most riders prefer Presta valves and lengths that clear the rim bed, commonly 42mm, 60mm, or 80mm. Schrader is shorter and wider, so measure your rim depth first—too-short valves can cause tension and increase pinch-flat risk while overly long valves can complicate installation.

Performance riders often choose TPU or latex for weight and rolling resistance; TPU packs tiny at about 25–40g and latex gives lower rolling resistance but trades air retention. Butyl remains the durable everyday choice, holding roughly 1 psi per day and typically weighing 100–150g, so pick TPU or latex if shaving grams matters.

Solid inserts like Tannus are a good call if you want flat-free riding on debris-prone routes, for commuting, or for heavier setups like e‑bikes since they eliminate the need for air. They sacrifice a bit of suppleness compared to air-filled tubes but provide reliable protection where thorn‑resistant or self-sealing tubes might still puncture.

Start by matching the wheel diameter stamped on the tire—26", 27.5" (650b), or 29"—and then pick a tube width range that covers your tire, for example a 26x1.75/2.1 tube fits 1.75–2.1" tires. Tubes are generally safe with about a +/-10% width variance, so check the tire sidewall (like 29x2.25) and select the closest tube size to avoid excess tension or bunching.
