Men's Blue Hiking & Backpacking Boots & Shoes

Start by matching the cut to terrain and pack weight: low-cut hiking shoes suit day hikes on light to moderate terrain, mid-cut boots work for multi-hour hikes or light backpacking, and high-cut backpacking boots excel on multiday treks with heavy loads and rough terrain. Models like the Oboz Sawtooth X Mid B-Dry show how a mid-cut can balance durability and deep-lug traction.

Try boots on with the hiking socks you'll wear, leave about a thumb's width of toe space, and check for secure heel lockdown to avoid blisters. Sizing often runs true but expect a break-in of roughly 10–20 miles before they feel fully settled.

Full-grain leather offers superior abrasion resistance and long-term durability for rugged use, while nubuck or split-grain paired with nylon mesh gives a lighter, more breathable option. Synthetics break in more quickly and are a good choice if you want weight savings and faster comfort on shorter trips.

For mud-shedding traction aim for outsoles with about 4–5mm lug depth and a sticky compound like Vibram Megagrip or Trail Tread for slick rock. Vibram soles are durable—often lasting 500–1000 miles—and models such as the Scarpa ZG Trek GTX pair deep lugs with a supportive chassis for rough, wet terrain.

Waterproof membranes such as GORE-TEX and eVent provide reliable waterproofing (many rated over a 20,000mm hydrostatic head) while still allowing moisture transfer, but they can feel warmer on very sweaty, sustained efforts. If breathability is your top priority for hot days, consider lighter synthetic or unlined trail-runner styles instead.
