Men's Blue Hiking & Backpacking Boots

Day hiking boots are best for short outings on light terrain and typically weigh under two pounds per pair, giving you more mobility. Backpacking boots, such as the Vasque Talus AT, offer stiffer soles and more support for multiday trips with heavier loads, while mountaineering boots add crampon compatibility and extra-stiff construction for snow and ice.

For wet trails and stream crossings, pick boots with a breathable waterproof membrane to keep feet dry without trapping sweat. Options like Gore-Tex Surround or ULTRADRY treatments provide waterproof protection while helping reduce moisture buildup and blister risk.

Start by trying boots with proper arch support, cushioned midsoles, and an adjustable lacing system to lock your heel in place. Allow a break-in period; wear them around the house or on short hikes first, since leather options like full-grain will soften and help prevent blisters on extended trips.

Traction depends on lug pattern and sole stiffness: deeper, multidirectional lugs and a stiffer sole help on rocky, uneven ground. Vibram outsoles are known for durable grip, while shallower, tightly spaced lugs work better on wet, smooth surfaces and widely spaced lugs shed mud more effectively.

Materials affect weight and durability: full-grain leather is rugged and highly water-resistant but heavier and needs more break-in, while nubuck offers durability with a bit more flexibility. Split-grain leather paired with nylon creates lighter, more breathable boots like the Oboz Sawtooth X Low, though it trades some abrasion and water resistance for reduced weight.
