Men's Black Board Shorts

For surfing and foiling you want mobility and knee coverage, so aim for shorts in the 16–22 inch range with a slightly tapered or athletic cut that still allows movement. Models like the Florence Marine X F1 Cordura Airtex combine 4-way stretch and abrasion-resistant Cordura to balance protection with freedom on the wave, and many include griplock waistbands or lasso laces to stay secure.

Performance boardshorts are built for high-movement water sports with 4-way ultra stretch and hydrophobic quick-dry treatments, while boardwalk styles emphasize relaxed silhouettes and everyday comfort. The O’Neill Hyperfreak, for example, focuses on high stretch and fast drying for active use, whereas boardwalk shorts lean on softer recycled fabrics for lounging.

Waistband tech like silicone grip bands, griplock waistbands, and lasso laces are best for paddling and wakeboarding because they resist slippage during intense movement. Elastic waists with drawcords work for casual swimming, but fixed-waist or griplock designs give the most reliable hold in active water sports.

Recycled hydrophobic fabrics and Cordura Airtex construction are designed to resist abrasion and shed water, so they hold up well to repeated saltwater exposure. The Florence Marine X F1 Cordura Airtex is highlighted for all-around durability and quick-dry performance in demanding conditions.

Shorts with liners like Drylock or Infiniti usually add support and help reduce water retention, which can improve comfort during longer swims. Expect a slightly snugger feel from a lined short, but the added support often pairs with 4-way stretch fabrics so you don’t sacrifice mobility.
