Brown Ice Climbing

For mixed terrain and approach routes, all‑round tools around 50–65cm give versatility and easier placements; models like the Black Diamond Hydra offer carbon‑fiber lightness at about 310g per tool. If you’re focused on vertical waterfalls or dry tooling, opt for steep tools such as the Petzl Nomic that are designed for pure steep ice.

Vertical ice climbs call for dedicated vertical‑point crampons with steel front points in the 4–5cm range to bite into frozen waterfalls. Also confirm the crampon’s bail or strap system precisely matches your boot’s toe and heel geometry to prevent slippage.

Boots need enough toe room for thick socks and foot expansion, so try unisex sizes across the 37–49 range (half sizes to 46) with the socks and liners you’ll use. For technical ice, choose full‑shank, stiff B2/B3 boots like the Scarpa Phantom Tech HD — it’s built for crampon compatibility and weighs about 1.75 lbs per size 42.

An alpine‑style harness with ice clipper slots and adjustable leg loops prevents binding when you’re wearing bulky layers, and a padded waist makes long belays more comfortable. Materials that shed snow, like mesh or snow‑shedding padding, help reduce packed snow and improve comfort on multi‑pitch routes.

Pick an in‑mold foam helmet with a polycarbonate shell for light impact protection and ventilation, and make sure it adjusts over a beanie and gloves for a secure fit. Pair that with an insulated belay jacket rated for sub‑zero temps and durable outer materials so you stay warm and protected at belay stations under hanging ice.
