Singles are best for top-roping, short single-pitch ice, or drytooling where abrasion resistance and simple handling matter. Half and twin ropes are intended to be used in pairs for multi-pitch routes and long rappels up to 70m, and they help reduce drag and manage swing falls.

For alpine or glacier travel, thinner 7–8mm rando or glacier models save weight on long approaches but demand precise handling to avoid kinking. If you expect heavy crampon or tool abrasion, stepping up to an 8–9.5mm single gives better durability and knot-holding.

In wet or mixed ice a dry-treated rope makes a noticeable difference because treatments like Full-Dry, 2XDry, or Golden Dry help shed water and limit ice buildup. Consider models like the Black Diamond 7.8 Full-Dry Half when you need a rope that handles brutal wet ice and frozen environments.

For multi-pitch routes and long rappels most climbers choose 60–70m ropes since that length covers common rappel stations and big alpine descents. Half-rope sets such as the Edelrid Skimmer 7.1 are offered in those lengths and give redundancy plus reduced rope drag on complex terrain.

Thinner 7–8mm ropes are lighter and make long approaches easier, with weights per meter toward the low end of the 40–60g range, but they require careful feeding to avoid kinks and tangles. Expect less abrasion resistance than 8–9.5mm ropes, so look for a robust nylon core and a durable sheath if you plan heavy crampon or tool use.
