Blue Webbing & Cords

Tubular webbing delivers better knot security and pliability, making it ideal for slings, runners, and anchors. Flat webbing is more suited to lashing and low-profile uses, and options range from slim 8mm strips to 1-inch tubular like BlueWater Tubular Climb-Spec.

Smaller cords in the 2–5mm range are great for lightweight gear ties, while 5–6mm works well for accessory uses. For prusiks you want thicker loops, and 6.5–7.5mm sewn prusik loops or a 7mm Sterling Sewn Prusik with about a 19-inch loop offer reliable friction for hitches.

Pick UHMW polyethylene (Dyneema/Spectra) when you need minimal stretch and maximum strength, for example an 8mm Dyneema sling rated around 22kN for alpine rigging. Nylon Perlon is preferable when a bit of stretch and superior knot-holding are helpful; use double fisherman's knots on nylon and consider a triple fisherman's for thinner Dyneema.

For trad anchors, a 7mm or 8mm cordelette about 18–20 feet long gives the best versatility for equalizing multiple pieces. Climbing-specific nylon cordelette handles knots well and makes it easier to form a clean master point without bulky knots.

Sewn slings are generally more reliable for anchors because factory stitching removes human error—models like the Mammut Contact Sling use 6mm Dyneema and are rated for high strength. Water-knotted webbing or custom loops are useful when you need a specific length or material, but they require careful knot tying and consideration of abrasion resistance.
