White Gravel & Cyclocross Wheel Small Parts

It depends on your frame clearance and riding style. 650b wheels suit aggressive gravel and smaller frames, letting you run wide MTB tires (2.0–2.6 inches) for rough terrain, while 700c wheels work better for mixed pavement and gravel with 35–47mm tires.

Deeper rims tend to be faster on open stretches but feel less quick in tight, technical sections, while shallow 19–24mm rims give agile handling and better mud clearance for cyclocross. Mid-depth options around 25–32mm internal width are a good compromise for mixed surfaces, and models like the Shimano WH-RX880 (carbon pair, 25mm IW) aim to blend aero and control.

Tubeless-ready rims let you run lower pressures for added traction and are easier to repair trailside with plugs or sealant, which helps on rocky gravel. Tubular setups can be lighter and preferred by some racers, but reinforced sub-tread casings and high TPI on tubeless-compatible tires give strong cut protection for rough terrain.

Match hub engagement and axle standards to your bike so everything fits and performs—common axle sizes are 12x100 front and 12x142 rear, and freehub systems come in ratchet or pawl styles. High-engagement options, like 36-point ratchet drives or 4-pawl hubs, give quicker acceleration and more immediate power transfer on punchy gravel climbs.

Wider rims support bigger tires and improve traction; a 25mm internal width is ideal for 32–50mm tires to avoid under-biking and to stabilize the tire profile. For durable, ride-focused builds choose aluminum or carbon rims with stout builds (28 spokes, 2x lacing) or look at wheels like the Ritchey WCS Zeta GX (1740g 650b, 25mm IW) for a balance of strength and tire support.
